Re: Moving to Gloucester
One other thing re football teams, I always found the most popular of the bigger sides withing reasonable reach of Gloucester is Aston Villa. You're half way between Birmingham and Bristol and we had boys who were at the academies at Villa, Birmingham City and Bristol City. But as has already been said, it's really a rugby town. Rugby was like the state religion at the grammar school I worked at.

Re: Moving to Gloucester
I live about 15 miles away and used to teach at one of the grammar schools in Gloucester. I've also done a bit of work in some of the other secondaries in and around the city but can't really speak with any knowledge about the primaries. Of course, it's great if you can get your kids into one of the grammars but the problem with having grammars is that they cream off the top layer so the comps are that much more challenging. Gloucester Academy and Beaufort are definitely to be avoided.

As for where to live, you've already had some good advice from others. Gloucester itself is very mixed - the house prices vary a lot, which gives you a good idea of how desirable an area is. Stroud isn't a bad shout, or if you want to be south of Gloucester there are some nice villages around. PM me if I can help with anything else.

Marrying a neighbour (to whom you were probably already related) was virtually the only game in town about 3 or 4 generations ago.

Ports & garrison towns probably being the major exceptions.

Re: Moving to Gloucester
Went school in Stroud, and used to work at the old nelson pub inbetween uni sometimes. My pal used to DJ at the vic.

Used to be loads of decent local football teams, and we were still playing 2 pts for a win up to 97. lol.

My gypo side of the family settled in sharpness and cam/dursley.

Idyllic place to grow up, but i'd find it a bit boring now to be honest. In my old village you either literally married your neighbour, or left and never came back

Re: Moving to Gloucester
Stroud is listed as one of the best places in the country to live these days.

When I first moved over here I was told to avoid the place like the plague. Whenever I've been there seemed to be a lot of simpletons about but a lot of them now knock about Glos City Centre which is a shithole - bar The Abbey pub. That's decent.

Wtf is a cone head?

I’d definitely look at Stroud I spend a lot of time around Woodchester which is lovely. It’s a good place to bring up kids, I’ve always said I’d be happy to move there when that time comes
